Karaoke Toothbrush

Posted by bradwick on March 18, 2010

Wow. Long time, no post. Sorry, but I’ve been stupid busy with all sorts of stuff comics and animation related. I just thought I’d throw a quick post up with a new short I knocked out in about 4 days (brag!). For a local variety show hosted by Jon “the pop culture King” Waterhouse. It was a great show and I’m really looking forward to the next one. They did a 3 camera shoot of the thing, so it might make it’s way to the internets at some point. It’s called the Wang Dang Doodle Variety Talk Show. Anyway, here’s my contribution:

Thanks for reading! And I’ll try to throw up some more comics real soon!-B

Modern Cartoons I Love Part 3: Sponge Bob!

Posted by bradwick on September 1, 2009

I don’t know why I’ve fallen so behind on posting these things! They have been done for weeks! Sponge bob is great and everyone knows why it’s this point. So i won’t bore you to death with the obvious… okay, maybe i will! It all comes down to the visual gags. No other modern cartoon has half as many great sight gags as single episode of sponge bob.  I’d love for someone to do a total series sight gag count. Anyway, Here is my pretty off model homage to the guy!

sb-color.jpg

I forgot to scan the pencils this time, and I really should have lowered the horizon a bit, but whatever. I’m pretty proud of the background, I don’t have acess to painter, but i think i pulled off a decent job using just photoshop. Maybe I’ll post Batman next.

Thanks for reading

Modern Cartoons I Love Part 2: The Mighty B!

Posted by bradwick on August 5, 2009

Oh man, I love this show! This in my eyes is a perfect cartoon. It has really funny specific characters, great voice talent (Amy Poehler!), and every background looks like it should be in a gallery behind glass. Everyone involved is amazing ( Seonna Hong, Bill Wray, and again Amy Poehler). Plus it’s got the added bonus of being one of two shows ever to have a girl character engage in hilarious slapstick. Other than Olvie Oyl I can’t think of any other “slapsticky” girls in the world of cartoons. I wish that Nickelodeon would play this half as much as they play Sponge Bob.

Here are the pencils:

b-pencils.jpg

b-color-2.jpg

Again, This was the first time drawing the characters, and sadly I had no model sheets to go by. I Drew this the same day I drew the flapjack one so I still had no pens, so I opted for the brush. I drew all the background stuff in photoshop and recycled those same textures that I used for the flapjack drawing. I would have loved to really spent some serious time on the backgrounds, but I only had 2 days to do 4 illustrations (I’m full of excuses).

Thanks for reading and be back next week for sponge bob!

Modern Cartoons I Love Part 1: Flapjack!

Posted by bradwick on July 23, 2009

Hey gang, I read something in the last week or 2 about Chowder (on cartoon network) getting canceled and Cartoon Network pushing in a new era of live action shows. Now I don’t know if the canceling of chowder was related to the programing shift, but it got me worried about the fates of some of my other favorite modern cartoons and how i should do something to spread the word about their greatness. So I had a day or two of down time at work and thought I would do some illustrations based on some of my favorite cartoons on the air right now just to show a little support. So let’s kick it off with Flapjack!

Flapjack is funny, Gross, and cute all at the same time! Love it! And you will too if you check it out on Cartoon Network.

Here are the pencils:

flap-jack-pencils.jpg

flap-jackcolor-2.jpg

And here is the slightly modified final image. I was going to ink this with a pen and make it a little more “on model” but The pens I had dried up , so I went with the ol’ brush (Raphael #2). I thought it turned out alright. This was my first time drawing them, and I couldn’t really find any model sheets, but I had some fun with it. I did all the background stuff in photoshop using some old watercolor textures I had scanned in for a music video we did. I was really surprised how true to the show the textures looked. yay me.

I’ll post my Mighty B Illustration next week!

thanks for reading!

Man-Dar DVD!!!

Posted by bradwick on June 24, 2009

Hey guys! Long time no see!

I got a few emails asking about this, So I thought I’d throw up a post real quick. I had about 30 of these things to sell/promote at Heroes con 09

The response has been better than expected and I need to Thank super pals J Chris Campbell and Dollar Bin Adam for hooking up the Friday night viewing party for it. It was the first time anyone has seen all 7 episodes, so I didn’t really know what to expect. But everyone seemed to have a good time and everyone laughed much more than I would have ever expected! The DVD’s had a few little errors like some foley being too low and some missing music in one scene so we’re going through and fixing that stuff now, and we’ll do another pressing next week. I’ll post them up here for sale as soon as I do! they look like this:

mandar-dvd.jpg

Pretty cool huh?

Thanks again to everyone who’s been commenting/asking about it.

I’ve been really busy lately with a bunch of neat stuff, so I’ll try and post some when i get a sec.

Thanks for reading!

The Ancient Age FCBD Preview!

Posted by bradwick on April 24, 2009

Free Comic Book Day is on may 2nd this year, and as always the fine folks over at Wide Awake Press are putting together a big ol’ Free downloadable book.

This year’s book is called “the ancient age” and is looking even more impressive than .  J Chris even made this swank video preview for the fancy thing!

I’ve got a 12 (ulp!) page story all drawn up for the book and I thought I’d share some random unfinished panels with ya.

prview-3.jpg

Drawing in this style is pretty new to me, so I’ve been having to do a TON of under work for the drawings. I’ve been starting off in blue then going back for a second pass in red Which barely cleans it up (as you can see) So most of the tightening up is taking place in the inking stage.

prview-2.jpg

I’m trying to keep the inking as loose as possible To really emphasize the movement since the story is basically one large fight scene. Which was actually a pretty big challenge for me. I’m still not sure how I’ve gotten by all these years without drawing a muscly kinda guy throwing a punch.

prview-1.jpg

Will this experiment turn out well? Will i start inking all my comics with toothbrushes? Will I spend the rest of my days traveling the earth setting fire to every set of eyes that reads the thing?

Find out on May 2nd at www.wideawakepress.com!

(also pick up a copy of by newest book; Tobey Maguire Comics and stories while your there!)

Thanks for reading!

Excuses and Crap

Posted by bradwick on March 3, 2009

Oh man! I haven’t posted a web comic in forever! And I doubt I’ll be getting around to it anytime soon, as I have been busy doing comics for a couple of different things. What things you ask? These things I answer!

1. 2009 Fluke anthology!  Me and super pal J Chris Campbell are not only doing comics for this beast (over 80 pages folks!) But we are also editing and doing all the productiony stuffs as well. If you wanna get a copy of this giant sized funny book you better get yer self down to scenic Athens Ga on April 7th for FLUKE 2009 cause that’s just about the only way to get a copy!

2.  WAP FCBDB!  J Chris Campbell savagely beat upon my tender face with his crusty meat hooks until I agreed to do a 12 page comic for him. This annual FCBD (free comic book day) Download is always a good time. So much in fact that every year it gets better and better. You can still download last years right here. It will be available May..um… May something.. I don’t remember what day it’s on this year and I’m too lazy to google it. Just start asking strangers for free comics on May first and I’m sure you’ll figure it out.

Anyway, I’ll be doing some (hopefully) cool ass Greek stuff In the style of this poster I just did last week for my good pal and sound guy John Mickelson.

shadowboxer-3.gif

Doing comics in this style is a new challenge for me. I enjoy drawing in this style but anytime i try and do a comic like this it always looks way too stiff and I get embarrassed, but so far it’s going okay, but I may end up eating these words when I chicken out and go with my original “wacky” idea. I dunno, who cares about that anyway?

I’ll try and get some web comics up again soon. I got a bunch laying around I just haven’t had time to scan/correct and color/uglify them.

Man-Dar Should be up tomorrow. We had a little computer mishap that took us out of the equation for a week and some change. Luckily we recovered everything and I am actually exporting the first episode as i type this. So look for Man-Dar sometime tomorrow!

Explosion!

You like that sound? Then come see J Chris Campbell and myself Tomorrow (friday the 20th) and Saturday (the 21st) at the 1st ever Atlanta Super Con, and I will make that sound effect for you in person!  J Chris and I will be at the Students Of The Unusual table  along with Students Of The Unusual creator Terry Cronin (extra special thanks goes to Terry for having us out) .

So if your in and or around the Atlanta area and you love comics, come out and show your love. It sure would be nice to have a real reliable comics convention here in Atlanta, but that can’t happen without your support.

And if you need more proof of what a good time this will be just gaze upon J Chris’ poster he did for the event!

HYPE: Bird Doggin!

Posted by bradwick on June 27, 2008

What’s up guys and girlies? I thought I’d go ahead and throw some images up from my newest book Bird Doggin’ It’s a collection of drawings of girls. Some are nude, some are fully clothed. The book is kind of all over the place as far as styles go. Some are realistic drawings done from old playboys, some are figure drawings done from models, and some are just made up. Its 24 pages of black and white drawings with a 8 page color section in the middle. So if you like naked ladies you might want to check it out!

Here are a few of the highlights:

If anyone is interested in buying one I’m selling ‘em for 4 bucks plus shipping. You can drop me a line at: bradmcginty(at)gmail.com and I’ll tell you how to pay me. I know that must seem like a hassle, but pay pal buttons don’t work in my wordpress powered blog unless you have a plug in (which I do not). But if you order one from me I’ll be sure to throw in a free sketch just to show my gratitude!

I’ll promise to find a more permanent solution to this soon enough kids, as I plan on (finally) putting all the books I have in print up on the site for purchase.

Thanks for stoppin’ by!

HEROES CON 08: The Ultimate Untold Story

Posted by bradwick on June 26, 2008

Welp, I just got back from Heroes Con, and this year I decided to do something I always forget to do. Take pictures! That’s right kids! Not only did I remember to pull the camera out twice during the entire 3 day trip, I also remembered to push the button. Good for me, and super lucky for you (you can thank me later) so sit back loyal blog readers, for I am about to take you on a journey I like to call; Heroes Con 2008: A journey into the hearts and minds of today’s comic reading public!

1.jpg

Okay here we are right out of Josh’s driveway. Bam! I catch Josh in mid steer. Look at that natural lighting. Josh says something like “I always look bad in pictures” So I then bravely turn the camera on myself.

2.jpg

Super Bam! Another great picture! 2 down, countless more thrilling pictures to go.

It’s just after 6 o’clock and we’re on our way to meet up with Athens cartoon legend Patrick Dean at some waffle house off of 85. Of course we go to the wrong Waffle House. Just in case you didn’t know almost every highway exit in Georgia has two waffle houses, one on each side of the ramp. This happens to most Atlantans every so often, so it’s not too big of a deal, or is it?. Is this where our tale ends dear reader?! Could this be the end of Brad and Josh?!

3.jpg

Balls no! Before you know it we’ve got Patrick dean in the car and we’re on well on our way to Charlotte! I and document this achievement with yet another photo. Look at this one. What a shot! It captures everything you need to know about life and cartooning. What’s that saying about pictures being worth a million thousand words? Well, if I were you I’d throw that crap saying away! This photo is worth at least double that! And that’s before you even take into account that these ears belong to Patrick dean (left) And Josh Latta (other one)

Okay at this point I forget to take pictures of the entire first day of the show. But whatever, There is always Saturday right? So Friday went alright. I had about two hours of sleep, and the con was a little sluggish (Friday’s are usually like that) but that’s fine. I don’t want a bunch of people around me begging for my wares while I’m flying at half mast anyway. So after the show on Friday Patrick, Josh and I all go back to our room and proceed to talk about comics and blow through 30 beers. Then we head down to lobby of the Hilton. Run into one of the world’s top notch peeps; Rob Ullman and his gang. Then we’re told that we can’t drink our cans of Bud Light in the hotel lobby, so we get all Avril Lavine on him and kindly throw them away. Which is fine cause we were on our way to the Westin anyway. So we go to the Westin. Drink some more booze. I get to sit at the bar with (seriously) two of my all time most favorite cartoonists ever; Even Dorkin and Xamie Hernandez! I don’t remember much about the conversation, but I do know that Evan Dorkin is really funny. Then we somehow end up sneaking into some krunk ass club that we had to get frisked twice to get into. Patrick and I made it through, but the door men were hip to our game by time Josh got through. So they nabbed us all and we had to leave. Lame.

I think we went home after that. Thanks to Patrick for reminding me about that night club thing because I had totally forgot.

4.jpg

Saturday! Okay here’s where shit gets real. Josh and J Chris start boozing it up and I just bust out my camera and snap this million dolar baby. That’s Josh Front and center, and to his blurry left is J Chris “king of the mini comics” Campbell. That guy can’t stay still for a second. Jus look at this next pic for proof!

5.jpg

Jeez J Chris! I see you already, quit waving! I’m trying to take awesome photo’s here! Sheesh. So while I have my camera out. I decide to take a few more “shots” But who to take a picture of? Hmmm. Wait I got it!

6.jpg

Shannon smith and Josh Latta! (next to Shannon) Shannon is an awesome mini comics reviewer and maker. He knows exactly what a good comic should have in it regardless if it’s main stream or a small press book. He just loves comics and it shows. So now that I’ve got my camera out this reminds Shannon, that he should get his camera out too, which leads us to this:

7.jpg

Super Blam! Here is Shannon right in the thick of it, taking a picture of me, while I was taking a picture of him. It’s like breaking the 4th wall in the real world, which could be kind of dangerous. lets move on.

8.jpg

Why look what’s right here next to us! It’s Jason Horn and Dean Trippe. Dean is hard at work on a (no doubt) great looking sketch, which he produces constantly all day long with out effort. Someone told me he even does con sketches in his kitchen on Tuesday mornings. It just no big deal for him. Get there early though, the list fills up fast! Jason looks kind of grumpy in this photo which is great for me because he never looks like this, so it must be that I’m such a great photographer that I just pull the emotions right out my subjects.

9.jpg

Then suddenly out of no where I hear “Hey Brad! Take a picture of this girl looking at your comics” It was my photographer’s instincts, and they were spot on. I did need to take a half blurry picture of some girl looking at a comic she didn’t buy. Nice work photographer’s instincts, I owe ya one.

10.jpg

Then without a thought I spin around and catch J Chris blowing super realistic fire at a kinda blurry Shannon smith! Holy crap, I better do something to calm him down, before he does in again, but what? Then it hit me.

102.jpg

I’ll get Scott Ellingburg to pay me 5 bucks to draw him as a hot chick! I have a sign to do these sketches up every year, and every year one person takes me up on it. This year it was Scott. What a good sport! I bet his wife will love it. Heck I wouldn’t be surprised if they named their first child: Drawing of Scott as a hot chick. I guess I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t either.

Well that’s all the crappy pictures I took this year. I really meant to take a lot more pictures, but this is all I had in my camera when I got back Monday. I did a horrible job. And left my camera in the room most of the time. Oh well. If anyone is interested in a much more interesting and accurate account of the Heroes con experience then check out these links below.

 Shannon’s take

Joshy’s Take

 Rob Ullman’s take

 The rest

Thanks again for everyone who came out and bought sketches and books from me. It means a lot to me. Mad Props must be issued to Dustin Harbin, for throwing the whole indie island together. It was a great time, and the guests definitely made this year a great success.

 Thanks for reading!
